The 1998-1999 world cotton outlook predicts modest decreases in consumption and imports and marginal increases in exports and production. Ending stocks increased by approximately 400,000 bales. The September 1999-2000 forecast predicted lower production and ending stocks than did the August 1999-2000 forecast. Reductions in production in the United States, India, and Uzbekistan lowered world production forecasts by 1.6 million bales. Ending stocks decreased by 1.25 million bales, resulting in a world stocks-to-consumption ratio of 47.1 percent.
