High performance fibers for industrial applications include high temperature textile fibers, such as Nomex; inorganic specialty fibers, such as boron, silicon, and carbide; and high strength, high modulus reinforcing fibers, such as Kevlar, carbon, polyethylene, and glass fibers. Such aramid fibers as Kevlar offer tensile properties 5-10 times greater than those of other manmade fibers. Kevlar and other aramid fibers are replacing metal and inorganic fibers in such applications as ropes, cables, and composite reinforcements. Carbon fibers, which have very high modulus and high tensile strength, have applications in composites for the aerospace and sports equipment industries. Nomex fiber retain strength, flexibility, and resistance to abrasion and stretching at operating temperatures of up to 250 degrees centigrade. Ceramic fibers have a continuous high temperature use threshold of 1260 degrees centigrade.
