Fiber Outlook: Bumpy Road Getting a Little Smoother

Fiber manufacturers are focusing on key innovations to improve sales in 2000. New fiber developments and variants for specific niche applications will drive sales. Du Pont will focus on certain apparel segments and longer lasting areas to take advantage of cost competitive apparel, and not develop products for specific seasons. It also believes there is growth potential for microfibers. KoSa will focus on Corterra stretch polyester fibers and will introduce EZ Dye polyester fiber, which can be dyed with less carrier and at a lower pressure. Wellman Fibers will offer its EcoSpun line of recycled polyester fibers. Cotton Incorporated will continue to market cotton as a fashion apparel fiber despite competition from new manmade fibers. Functional finishes will help to improve the competitiveness of cotton. Lighter weight acrylic fabrics will extend the season for acrylic fibers. Aquator nylon is a new moisture transfer fiber for athletic wear.
