Utilizing jute plant stems for the manufacture of paper and boards by conventional methods involves digestion of the stem fibers with caustic soda, sodium sulfide, or sodium carbonate in open conditions or under pressure. Because these methods consume chemicals and energy and contribute to pollution, researchers have developed biopulping methods for the jute sector to achieve delignification through the use of microbes. Testing indicated that Phaenerochaete chrysosporium is a more effective delignifier for jute stems than Ceriporiopsis subvermispora. However, both delignifiers required a two step process with a mild chemical treatment stage. 5 refs.
