Researchers studied the basic chemical composition of jute using estimation techniques. Experiments estimated the levels of holocellulose; alpha cellulose; hemicellulose; lignin, including hemilignin and glycolignin; fats and waxes; pectin; protein; mineral matter; metal ions; coloring matter consisting of xanthophyll, carotene, and tannin; and ash. Results showed that jute is a complex mixture of chemical compounds. The fiber consists of small units of cellulose cemented together by lignin and hemicellulose. Physically, it includes chains of cellulose, hexosan, petosan, and polyuronides. The chains run along the fiber axis and are stabilized by hydrogen bonds.
