An overview of recent research on the physics and chemistry of wool yellowing and the types of chromophores present in wool provides a perspective on the chemical basis of wool color. Topics include adventitious discoloration, bleaching, photochemistry of key amino acids in wool, analytical methods used to study wool yellowing, extraction of yellow material from wool, and attempts to isolate and characterize wool yellowness. Researchers identified the principal yellow moiety in wool as a peptide. Studies suggested that a minor protein fraction of wool as a crosslinked component of the cell membrane complex was a large component of wool yellowness. 43 refs.
