Researchers used optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to examine the skin-core structure of lyocell staple fibers. Photomicrographs of damaged lyocell staple fibers provided information concerning skin-core structure, and characteristics of the lyocell fiber core, fiber surface, macrofibrils, and fibrillation. The core comprises macrofibrils of regular structure arranged along the fiber axis with high orientation and an amorphous region among the macrofibrils consisting of molecules extending from fringed macrofibrils. Researchers developed a model that accounts for the performance properties of lyocell staple fibers. The skin-core structure is responsible for such unique properties as fibrillation, which occurs only when the fibers are saturated with water or an alkali solution. 20 refs.
