Lactron, a biodegradable manmade fiber manufactured from melt extruded polylactic acid (PLA), has a density of 1.27 grams per cubic centimeter, tensile strength of 4.5-5.5 grams per denier, elongation of 30 percent, and Young's modulus of 400-600. It has sufficient tenacity and durability for common apparel and nonapparel applications. Conventional composting methods and field trials demonstrated that Lactron is biodegradable and suitable for composting after use. A basic life cycle assessment revealed that Lactron emits less carbon dioxide than do conventional manmade fibers. Although the price of Lactron is high due to the limited production of PLA, costs will decline following the expected increase in global production of PLA early in the 21st century.
