Synthesis and Properties of Water-Soluble Derivatives of Chitin.A Review.

Researchers at the Moscow State Textile Academy developed concepts to explain the correlation between the structure and properties of an important class of biopolymers that consisted of aminopolysaccharides derived from aquatic organisms. Experiments used improved methods of obtaining water soluble derivatives of chitin and characterized their structure and physical, chemical, and functional properties. Applications included the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, surfactant-polyelectrolyte complexes, and films. Characteristics of chitin and chitosan included the concentration of moisture, ash, and incoluble substances : degree of acetylation : molecular weigh : and particle size. 29 refs.
