Ring spinning is the most important spinning process due to the high quality of ring spun yarns based on staple fiber. Compact spinning represents a new type of ring spinning with improved production costs and product quality. Yarn applications include both weaving and knitting. Tension in the compacting zone is critical to yarn properties and spinning operations. Tension draft varies depending on fiber type. Optimization of the ring and traveler requires further research. Compact spun yarns are notable for their increased strength and levelness and decreased hairiness and friction. Improved yarn properties result in improved processability throughout the textile chain and improved end product quality. Single ply woolen warp yarns can be processed unsized. Size can be reduced by up to 40 percent in cotton warp yarns. Weft insertion experiments with compact spun wool yarns show a marked increase in loom efficiency.
