The National Cotton Council is dedicated to improving the productivity and quality of United States cotton. Genetic engineering has resulted in strains that are resistant to herbicides and pests. Narrow row planting has optimized the use of water and nutrients, and helped to control weeds. Barcodinging has been applied to ginning to facilitate testing, inventory, sales, and downstream processing. Growers are using computer to determine when to water, fertilize, and apply pesticides.
