Although India ranks fifth in number of sheep in the world, its per unit production is very low, largely due to the marginal conditions under which the sheep are raised. Important regions and breeds are discussed as well as research aimed at improving the industry. Breeds are classified by fiber diameter and other properties, such as staple length, greasy yield, and medullation. Classification is used to determine optimal end-product applications. For example, nonmedullated fine wool blended with medullated coarse wool is excellent for handknotted carpets.
