China plans to increase its production of acrylic and other fibers used in the domestic and exported apparel and textile industries. Shortages of these fibers now exist, and at least 80 percent of China's investment in the textile industry for 1990 will be allocated to building synthetic fiber plants. Synthetic fiber output is scheduled to reach 2.5 million tons 1995, up from the current 1.5 million tons. Four acrylic fiber plants are either currently under construction or will start being built by year's end. China contrasts with nations such as the United States, where cut-backs in fiber production and plant closings are occurring.
