During 1989, cotton commanded a 50 percent share of the textile market in the United States and attained its highest level of consumption in 20 years. The rise in market share from 35 percent in 1975 to 50 percent in 1989 can be attributed to marketing and product development. Cotton in especially strong in the apparel sector with growing sales in men's casual pants, sweaters, and socks. Cotton/lycra blends are new products used in intimate apparel; cotton nonwoven products are a virtually untapped market. Cotton is also showing growth in the home textiles market for pillows, sheets, blankets, and towels. Research to improve cotton quality is continuing with current efforts directed toward computer controlled ginning and testing equipment.
