The contamination of cotton by foreign, or synthetic materials which cannot be removed during textile processes were examined. A large number of spinning companies participated in a survey conducted by the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF). Most mills stated that the main contaminant was polypropylene that came from picker bags or twines used before the ginning stage. Some cotton grower organizations decided that only jute bags could be used for picking and that only twin made from natural materials would be acceptable. Contaminants are known to cause yarn breaks, damage to machinery, and uneven dyeing. Besides polypropylene, common contaminants are oil and grease, rubber, and bale marking ink. Optical systems can be used to detect these contaminants. 43 refs.
