The propanol-retention method has been advocated as a quick and reliable means of measuring the swelling of cellulosic fibers. The method is a variation of the water-retention method. Dewaxed white jute and Egyptian cotton were pretreated with various concentrations of an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, washed with water and acetic acid, and dried. Diameter swelling was measured microscopically after immersion in anhydrous propynal and centrifuging. The propanol-retention method failed to give a consistent propanol retention pattern and was dependent on caustic soda concentration. 11 refs.
