The Southeast United States experienced poor yields and quality in 1999. Estimates below 500 pounds per acre represent the lowest yields during the 1990s. Micronaire was also low with a state average of 4.2. Virginia cotton had the lowest micronaire at 4.0, whereas South Carolina had the highest at 4.7. Staple length, however, was greatest in Virginia, decreasing progressively from North Carolina to Georgia. Environmental factors that affected cotton growing included high winds and heavy rains from hurricanes that hit Virginia and North Carolina, resulting in considerable fiber loss. Higher resulted in good staple fiber length. Lower temperatures in September combined with excessive rain proved to be poor conditions for assimilatory processes. The later maturing bolls had how micronaire and yield. Abstract.
