Very cool, wet weather in the spring made planting and early crop establishment difficult for the 1999 cotton growing season in the western United States. Despite this problem, the region's crop performed relatively well. Lygus bugs required some management at the beginning of the season in Arizona, whereas insect pressure was light in California. Pima acreage increased in the San Joaquin Valley, but decreased in Arizona and New Mexico. Production patterns followed those of acreage planted. Yields for both upland and pima cotton varieties were good average yields. Arizona planted the greatest percentage of transgenic cotton, including Bacillus thuringiensis, Roundup Ready, and stacked gene cotton. Abstract.
