Erratic weather characterized the 1999 cotton crop year in the Southwest United States, particularly during planting and harvesting. The high and rolling plains had good subsoil moisture at initial planting. Major thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail, however, resulted in significant losses. July and August were extremely dry, stressing crops and reducing yield and quality. A late fall with rain allowed some additional boll filling. A hurricane in South Texas during harvest damaged cotton. Fruiting patterns were normal of slightly higher than normal first fruiting positions. Insect pressure was lower than in previous years. Stresses during blooming and fiber development affected cotton quality. Fiber strength was high in most areas, particularly in the stripper cotton varieties grown on the plains. Areas with reduced root systems and/or lack of rain yielded cotton fibers with shorter lengths and higher micronaires than normal. Abstract.
