A review of the 1999 cotton growing season in the Mid South United States notes that 3.68 million acres were harvested, up 519,000 acres from 1998. The yield was 668 pounds per acre, up 34 pounds from 1998, but low compared with the five year average of 717 pounds per acre. The most frequently planted cotton varieties were Stoneville BXN 47 and D&PL NuCOTN 33B. Cotton growers increasingly use conservation tillage due to reduction in crop production costs. No-till is also more popular, particularly in Tennessee. The early growing season experienced severe thrip problems. Very few disease problems occurred. Weather was unusually good in May and June, producing an excellent crop that was devastated during a subsequent drought that lated three months. The drought affected dryland crops much more than irrigated crops. Weather during harvest was excellent. Trash content was low, and color grades were superior. Fiber length was unusually short. Micronaire was much higher than normal, except in Mississippi, resulting in price discounts on many bales. Abstract.
