A review of the 1999 cotton growing season in the Southeast United States emphasizes that most cotton growers had major financial problems due to poor crops and prices that decreased more than 20 percent in the last two years. The 1999 season continued that trend with poor production and quality and further price decreases. Government programs assisted some growers. The winter and early spring were dry, resulting in limited subsoil moisture. Problems occurred with seed supply and quality. Drought, high temperatures, and high humidity from mid July to mid August devastated what had been an exceptional crop due to favorable spring and early summer conditions. Insect pressure, particularly tobacco budworm and corn earworm, was low. Yield at approximately 500 pounds per acre will probably be the lowest in more than ten years. The decrease in yield combined with low prices decreased cash receipts to less than $450 million. Abstract.
