The Texas and Oklahoma cotton growing region comprises approximately 6 million acres and represents the most diverse environment of the United States Cotton Belt. Plant water stress is generally the greatest limitation to productivity. Both water supply and temperature conditions during boll filling affect lint quality. In 1999, weather and cotton production and quality varied through the region. The most important fiber property affected by the weather was fiber length. Areas that received satisfactory rain or irrigation during the first six weeks of flowering yielded cotton with staple lengths that reflected genetic potential. In areas that were very dry, particularly the Rolling Plains and High Plains, staple length was shorter than the genetic potential. The weather did not affect other fiber properties. Abstract.
