A study examined the influence of climatic conditions during cotton plant growth on the supermolecular structure of cotton fibers. Researchers examined Egypt-Giza, Sudan Baracat, India MCU-5, and United States pima long staple cottons using wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small cottons using wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXD), JSM-15 JEOL scanning microscope for cross section analysis, and infrared testing. X-ray diffraction determined the degree of crystallization, size of crystallites, and fiber texture. All the cottons showed medium maturity. Although WAXD did not reveal differences in molecular structure, SAXD did. The orientation indicators of Egyptian and Indian cotton were similar, whereas those of Sudan and United States cotton differed. Infrared testing determined that all the cotton samples had loose structures, but the structure of Indian cotton was the most loose. 7 refs.
