Costs Associated with Alternative Cotton Stripper-harvesting Systems in Texas.

A study designed to determine the least costly cotton stripper harvesting system collected data regarding investment costs, maintenance costs, and performance rate for four-, six-, and eight-row strippers with and without bur extractors. For Texas cotton growers with 582 acres and a lint yield of 586 kilograms, four-row strippers minimized harvesting costs with or without bur extractors. Without bur extractors, four-row strippers minimized harvesting costs for up to 1,400 acres and six-row strippers minimized costs for 1,500 acres or more. The results were based on the costs associated with ownership of one cotton stripper and may differ if costs associated with ancillary equipment are considered. Abstract. 11 refs.
