Researchers designing algorithms to assist in bale laydown must determine the number of bales in a typical warehouse, laydown size, procedures for rejecting certain solutions to laydown or bales, changes in the bale population, properties used to evaluate laydowns, whether to use between variance or within variance for each property, relationship between error bars and bale categorizations, whether properties exist that correlate with other properties, time available for calculating laydown, and hardware and software systems most applicable to the task. Such systems as Mathematica make algorithm development easier than C programming. Methods of generating bale laydown solutions include pairing, random generation, and genetic algorithm/bin packing methods.
