A financial crisis resulting from a strong United States dollar, low cotton prices, and lower world demand is accelerating consolidation in the cotton production sector. The percentage of production marketed through co-ops has increased. In 1993, the Staple Cotton Cooperative Association set up a system to select bales using high volume instrument parameters, allow mills to approve color and trash parameters of samples, and let mills run bale data through EFS systems and send truck load mixes for their laydowns back to the association. The association updated the system with state-of-the-art EFS software to eliminate the need for mills to evaluate samples directly. The system facilitates Just in Time inventory control, improves spinning efficiency, and reduces costs.
