An overview of cotton seed production addresses the definition of seed, number of seeds per boll, motes, cotton seed applications, cotton seed oil, proteins present in cotton seed, and gossypol-free cotton. Hirsutum varieties of cotton yield bigger seeds than barbadense, arboreum, and herbaceum genotypes. Diploid cultivated cottons have 3-4 locks per boll, whereas tetraploid cultivated species have 4-5 locks per boll. Each upland cotton lock has seven seeds on average. Cotton seed products include seed for planting, oil, hulls, meal, linters, and livestock feed. Gossypol, a phenol compound in cotton seed, is toxic to many nonruminants. Several countries developed gossypol-free cotton varieties that yield flour suitable for human consumption. 7 refs.
