Nine seed companies offer more than 55 different varieties of cotton seed for cultivation in North Carolina. Factors in selecting a cotton variety include yield, plant height, maturity, plant hairiness, seed size, and fiber quality. Soil fertility levels and plant growth regulators influence plant height. The proper choice of maturity potential and planting data allows boll opening to occur in the dry months of September and October. Tables provide data on relative varietal performance under different growing conditions in the major cotton growing areas of North Carolina, lint yield in pounds per acre, lint percentage, plant height, and percent of bolls opened.
