Impact of Tarnished Plant Bugs on Cotton: Insecticide Efficacy and Varietal Response.

In field trials comparing foliar spray insecticides for the control of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), insecticides that provided effective control of both adults and nymphs included Orthene 90S (0.5 pound active ingredient per acre), Regent 2.5EC(0.05 pound active ingredient per acre), and Monitor (0.33 pound active ingredient per acre). Bidrin 41 WP (0.33 pound active ingredient per acre) and Vydate 3.77L (0.25 pound active ingredient per acre) provided better control than the untreated check. Calypso 70 WG (0.047 pound active ingredient per acre) reduced infestations substantially. Tarnished plant bug population were higher in Stoneville 474 than in other cotton varieties. 3 refs.
