India produces 170 lakh bales of cotton per year, but Indian cotton remains the most contaminated cotton in the world. The Indian yarn spinning industry continues to use superior quality imported cotton. The Southern India Mills' Association believes that Indian farmers need to use better quality seed cotton and integrated pest management strategies to improve cotton quality. The Asian economic crisis forced the closing of 349 spinning mills in India. In 1999, India accounted for 21 percent of world cotton yarn exports.
