The July 1999 United States Department of Agriculture world cotton consumption estimate for the 1999-2000 market year indicated growth of approximately 3.5 percent from the previous year. A continued strong world economic performance fueled a strong demand for cotton products. Initial cotton consumption estimates showed substantial growth in India, Turkey, Mexico, Brazil, and Southeast Asia and smaller changes in the People's Republic of China, Pakistan, the European Union, and the United States. The 1999-2000 estimate of demand in China increased 10 percent over the initial estimate of 20 million bales. For Russia, estimates show a 67 percent increase in demand over the previous year. Despite a strong increase in demand for cotton textiles and apparel, United States consumption decreased 2.9 percent from 1998-1999.
