Metallocene catalysis yields commodity grade polymers with a low level of chain defects and achieves controlled incorporation of a wide range of comonomers and a very narrow molecular weight and short chain branching distribution. These properties enable the rational design of miscibility windows in blends of these polymers, resulting in high performance characteristics. Also, mixtures of saturated homopolymers and copolymers controlled by nonspecific dispersive interactions provide a system with which to investigate phase behavior in macromolecules in the absence of significant enthalpic effects. Experiments developed methods to investigate mixing and morphology in solid polymer blends using magnetic resonance, as well as methods that do not require isotopic labeling. The absence of polar, olefinic, or aromatic functionality in saturated blends presented a problem when establishing polarization gradients with which to follow spin diffusion directly, 5 refs.
