Radical Copolymerization of Various Vinyl Esters and the Cotacticities of the Copolymers.

Researchers conducted radical copolymerization of vinyl acetate (Vac) with vinyl butylate (VBu), vinyl isobutylate (ViBu), vinyl trifluoroacetate (VTFAc), and vinyl benzoate (VBz), and vinyl pivalate (VP) with VTFAc at 0 degrees centigrade by ultraviolet irradiation. Hydrogen nuclear magnetic spectra of polyvinyl alcohols obtained by saponification of the copolymers determined the cotacticities of the copolymers, which depended on monomer combination and feed monomer composition. Coisotacitic parameters derived from the terminal model expressed the cotacticities of Vac/BVu and Vac/VTFAc copolymers, whereas the penultimate model expressed the cotacticities of Vac/ViBu copolymers. Neither the terminal nor penultimate model adequately explained the cotacticities of Vac/VBz and VP/VTFAc copolymers. 6 refs.
