An overview of textile combustion defines commonly used terms and explains the steps in textile combustion. The major elements of combustion are fuel, heat, and oxygen. Heat applied to a substrate raises the substrate temperature and initiates thermal decomposition. Combustion occurs as gases evolve from the degrading substrate and combine with oxygen from the environment. Heat applied to a polymer causes the polymer to change from a hard and brittle state to a rubbery state as it reaches the glass transition temperature. The polymer chains break, and degradation occurs when the thermally unstable bonds break. Some polymers ignite when they lose their physical integrity. A chart diagrams both slow reaction and fast reaction combustion.
