Researchers grafted gelatins boiled out of chrome tanned waste leathers with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in an aqueous zinc chloride solution in the presence of K(2)S(2)O(8) as an initiator and assessed the content of fiber forming polymers in the postreaction solutions, degree of conversion of the monomer, degree of grafting of PAN onto the gelatin, amount of homopolymer acrylonitrile uncombined with gelatin, and dynamic viscosity of the resultant solution in relation to the initial acrylonitril/gelatin ratio and gelatin concentration. Grafting conditions that yielded optimal properties for processing copolymer into fiber included an acrylonitrile/gelatin weight ratio of 1.75 or 1.78, corresponding gelatin concentration of 2.6 or 2.8 percent, initiator concentration of 4 percent, reaction temperature of 65 degrees centigrade, reaction time of 150 minutes, and pH of 2.5. 6 refs.
