Analysis of Hydroperoxides in Solid Polyethylene by NMR and EPR Spectroscopy.

Carbon 13 magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy directly observed the hydroperoxide species in gamma-irradiated carbon 13 polyethylene. Experiments did not require special sample preparation, such as chemical derivatization or dissolution. Annealing experiments focused on thermal decomposition of the hydroperoxide species and measured an activation energy of 98 kilojoules per mole. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy suggested that residual polyenyl and alkylperoxy radicals were predominantly trapped in interfacial or crystalline regions, whereas the peroxy radicals observed after ultraviolet photolysis of hydroperoxides were in amorphous regions. 14 refs.
