Researchers measured six binary solvent mixtures for their rising bound chlorine contents to characterize the equilibrium swelling maxima of chlorosulfonated polyethylene vulcanizates and evaluate the one component (delta) and multiconponent (delta(0)) solubility parameters of delta = 18.2, 19.2, and 19.6 megapascals(1/2) and delta(0) = 18.4, 19.7, and 20.2 megapascals(1/2). The dispersion (delta(d)), polar (delta(p)), and hydrogen bonding (delta(h)) components of the solubility parameter were evaluated for the vulcanizates, where delta(p) = 6.4-7.9 megapascals(1/2), delta(d) = 16-16.7 megapascals(1/2), and delta(h) = 4.4-6 megapascals(1/2). The delta(d) varied slightly as the bound chlorine content increased, whereas delta(p) and delta(h) increased as the bound chlorine content increased. 14 refs.
