Surveys sampled 12,581 cotton fields in Arkansas from 1990-1999 for the presence of plant parasitic nematodes. University of Arkansas nematologists, county agents, of professional consultants collected composite samples each fall from August 15 to November 15. Each composite sample consisted of a minimum of 15 soil cores taken to a depth of 15-20 centimeters within the root zone from arbitrary locations in each field. Each complete sample represented an average of approximately 20 acres. Sample extraction occurred by wet sieving or a semi-automatic elutriator and sugar flotation. The root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita is widely distributed throughout cotton growing areas of the state. All counties surveyed had this species. Its distribution changed little during the survey period. The reniform nematode Rotylenchulus counties in southern Arkansas in 1990. Incidence has since increased rapidly throughout the southern region of the state. Abstract.
