Research on dipolar interactions in entangled polymers and networks used the beta sine correlation method with polydimethylsiloxane networks and generated results that were significantly different from those with polydimethylsiloxane melts. Evidence existed for nonzero anisotropic dipolar interactions that were particularly sensitive to the chain length between crosslinks. The strong dependence of the dipolar second moment on intercrosslink molar mass when this value was less than the entanglement mass was consistent with the concept of preaveraging on a chain fixed at each end. The dependence of the residual second moment on the molar mass of the precursor chain lengths below an entanglement mass equaling approximately 10,000. Only a weak molar mass dependence occurred. This effect probably resulted from the onset of physical entanglements when the precursor chain length exceeded the critical molar mass. 3 refs.
