Living anionic polymerization of styrene formed polystyrene films grafted from a silicate surface. Activated 1,1-diphenylethylene-chlorosilane initiation sites formed by self assembled monolayers on silicate surfaces. Contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ellipsometry characterized these films. The samples varied relative to the type of BuLi used to activate the initiator for polymerization, the type of additive used to accelerate initiation, film thickness in nanometers, and contact angle measurements. Model surfaces included glass, silicon wafers, and mica, which were optimal for a range of surface sensitive spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. 13 refs.
