Experiments modified the surface of silica nanoparticles with initiators used in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to yield composite films of polymer-nanoparticle hybrids, which acted as macroinitiators in controlled/living radical polymerization. ATRP grew well defined polystyrene and polymethyl methacrylate chains from the nanoparticle surfaces to generate individual particles comprised of a silica core and a well defined, densely grafted outer polymer layer. When cast from solution, the hybrid nanocomposites formed domains in which the inorganic cores were dispersed uniformly throughout the polymer domains. Methods varied the composition of the inorganic core to include CdS quantum dots. 28 refs.
