A prepolymer method prepared polyurethane elastomer from polycaprolactone, diphenylmethane diisocyanate, 1,4-butanediol, and trimethylolpropane. Researchers studied the effects of the amine catalyst 1,4-diazabicyclo(2,2,2)octane on the molecular structure and physical properties of the polyurethane elastomer. Use of the amine catalyst made the reaction more rapid than that of the noncatalyzed system. Polarizing microscopy reveald spherulites of small hard segments dispersed in the soft segments. Differential scanning calorimetry determined that the transition width, which originated from the glass transition temperature of amorphous hard segments, became larger and the phase mixing of the hard segment advanced. The amine catalyst also increased the modulus of elasticity and a buildup of stress in the extension over 300 percent. 9 refs.
