Study on Functionalization of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber with Surface Treatment

The synthesis of 6N-allyl-1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorododecylamino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithiol and 4,4'-morpholine disulfide under acidic media yielded 2,4-bis-(4-morpholinyl trithio)-6-(N-allyl-1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perflourododecylamino)-1,3,5-trazine (RfTDM). Contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared, and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) investigated the fluorination of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) treated with RfTDM solution. The surface of NBR treated with RfTDM showed infrared absorption peaks for the trazine ring at 1,544 centimeters and fluoro methyl fluoro methylene groups at 1,100-1,300 centimeters. TOF-SIMS confirmed fragments of the fluorine on teh NBR treated with RfTDM. Contact angle for water on the surface of the treated NBR was 115 degrees. 11 refs.
