Estimates of world cotton production predict increases of more than 3 percent in 1999-2000, with most of the increase occurring in the United States. World cotton consumption is also forecast to increase by an estimated 3.3 percent. A significant percentage of the United States supply will flow into world markets. Larger exports, however, are insufficient to offset the effects of both higher production and lower domestic consumption. Ending stocks are likely to rise. Early projections by the United States Department of Agriculture show lower foreign production for 2000-2001, but higher United States production. World consumption is likely to continue to rise. The United States cotton industry has the potential to capture a competitive share of the world export market. Based on normal weather and crop conditions, this scenario results in lower world ending stocks, with United States stocks increasing. 1 ref.
