Technical and industrial end uses account for approximately 19 percent of conventional manmade and natural textile fiber consumption in Europe. Unconventional fibers used in this sector include tapes; monofilaments; asbestos; and jute, sisal, glass, ceramic, and steel fibers. Conventional textile fibers, polypropylene tape, monofilaments, and glass fibers account for 33 percent of Western European, 27 percent of United States, and 39 percent of Japanese fiber consumption. Conventional textile fibers account for approximately 69 percent of total technical textile fiber use by weight. High tenacity fibers account for 28 percent. Carbon, aramid, and other high performance fibers account for 2 percent. Such specialty fibers as antibacterial and color change fibers account for 1 percent. 3 refs.
