High levels of certain metals may cause problems in yarn and fabric manufacture, dyeing, finishing, and textile waste treatment. A comparison of metals occurring in raw cottons from Africa, the People's Republic of China, Greece, Syria, Russia, and the United States determined that metal content in foreign cotton in much more variable than in United States cotton. The predominant metal in cotton was potassium, followed by calcium and magnesium; sodium; iron and copper; and manganese and zinc. Calcium levels in cotton from three countries were 10-20 percent higher than those in domestic cotton. Iron, which may cause yellowness, was higher in African and Greek cotton than in United States cotton. 12 refs.
