The Hohenstein Institute, Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials and Research, and the University of Leeds are the leading organization in research into all aspects of performance fabrics and finishes for outdoor apparel. Each uses computerized test manikins to evaluate fabric performance, including water resistance, wind resistance, and breathability. The Hohenstein manikin generates computer controlled models of the thermoregulation of the human body. It improves definitions of wearer comfort and more closely predicts physiological strains on the wearer. Its copper body is electrically heated to skin temperature by wires soldered to the underside.
