Future Quality Measurements

The Cotton Program currently reports seven high volume instrument (HVI) fiber quality measurements in the cotton classification process: micronaire, length, length uniformity index, strength, Rd color, +b color, and percent area of trash. Evaluations to improve measurements have included changes in HVI color grade determination to improve agreement between HVI and Universal Color Grade Standards. The Cotton Program recently evaluated proposed measurements for short fiber, stickiness, and elongation. Of the new HVI measurements, the length to length uniformity index for deriving short fiber index and short fiber index algorithm measurement are closest to meeting classification measurement acceptance criteria. 7 refs.
