Polyurethanes, condensation polymers formed from polyhydroxy compounds and polyisocyanates, are described. The main advantages of polyurethanes are their versatility and durability. They can have either a rigid or a flexible form. The most important commercial form is expanded polyurethane, known as polyurethane foam. One type of semi-expanded polyurethane (integral skin) has good mechanical resistance to vibration, abrasion and ageing. Thanks to its versatility polyurethane has many applications and the foams represent the vast majority of total consumption. They find many uses are in textiles and wall coverings, accoustic and thermal insulation, furnishings and footwear, adhesives and seals etc.
