Ethicon of Somerville, New Jersey, has filed a US patent for a polyamide suture claimed to have improved knot strength, tensile strength and structural stability. The suture is made by melt-extruding and quenching a fine denier polyamide filament, such as polycapromide or polyhexamethylene adipamide, and drawing it at a draw ratio of 3.0-5.5. The filament is then wound on racks under uniform tension and annealed at 120℃-185℃ for at least 30 minutes. Annealing is believed to improve the crystalline morphology in sutures with small diameters, greatly improving their stability.
